The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes (3-3) will face the Macomb Lutheran North Mustangs (3-3) in a CHSL crossover game in week 7 action. The Cranes narrowly lead this series 19-17 all time.
Lutheran North comes into this game having achieved victories over Livonia Clarenceville 21-14, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 34-20, and Allen Park Cabrini 34-3. They have suffered defeats against Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 14-7, Riverview Gabriel Richard 50-22, and Romulus Summit 41-6. In a game that has MHSAA playoff ramifications, Lutheran North must win to keep its hopes alive.
“Lutheran North has a offense that allows them to put up points quickly,” said Cranes head coach Ben Jones. “They averaged almost 30 points a game in their victories.”
The Mustangs need to win 2 out of the remaining 3 games to qualify for the MHSAA state playoffs. They also sit one game behind Riverview Gabriel Richard, having still a chance at the Catholic League Championship game in the Prep Bowl.
Either way, this game is crucial to their post season chances.
“We have had great battles with Lutheran North, and we expect a competitive contest this week”, said Jones. “Our defense will be tested.”
Senior QB Angelo Basilico leads the Mustangs with great passing; senior RB Tyler Davey owns the ground game. Senior WR Alec Vandermeer is the primary target at wide out.
The Cranes come into this game ready to make a run for the MHSAA playoffs for the 6th consecutive year. A victory over the Mustangs would improve their chances.
With victories over Pontiac 41-0, Walled Lake Central 10-0, and Riverview Gabriel Richard 15-7, Cranbrook has three losses on the year- an intense loss to Dearborn Divine Child 14-10, a 16-0 loss to Loyola, and a 40-3 defeat by U of Detroit Jesuit.
“We have had a growing season so far. We have seen growth in both our starters and our backups,” said Coach Jones.
Senior QB Shane Wittenburg has led the Cranes passing attack. Senior RB Tariq Muhammad has had charge of the running game. Senior WR Gabe Peterson has been the leading receiver.
The Crane defense, led by seniors LB Jack Fairman, DT Will Kerr, and DB Jacob Peruski has only allowed 13 points per game on average, with 5 interceptions and 10 sacks on the year.
“This will be a good matchup”, said Jones.
The game will be played at Macomb Lutheran North 16825 24 Mile Rd, Macomb, MI 48042. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
