Game Preview-Cranbrook (9-1) takes on Detroit Mumford (7-3) in MHSAA District Final.


Senior OL/DL Tim Hauxwell will play a key role in the Cranes second round playoff game vs, Mumford.

The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes will face the Detroit Mumford Mustangs in the second round of the playoffs. This game serves as the Division 4, Region 4, District 2 final.

Mumford enters the game with a 7-3 record, with victories over Detroit Collegiate Prep, Detroit Henry Ford, Dearborn Henry Ford Academy, Detroit Cody, Detroit Edison Academy, and Detroit Douglass.

Mumford defeated Harper Woods Chandler Park both in the regular season, and in the first round of the playoffs.

Their losses were only to ranked opponents: Detroit Cass Tech, Detroit Central, and Saline.

“Mumford is a talented team with great athletes”, said Cranes Head Coach Joe D’Angelo. “They are very highly competitive and have great skill players.”

Mumford finished second in the Detroit Public School League-Green Division this year.

Senior Laviean Fields leads the Mustangs as a dual-threat styled quarterback. Senior RB Cerell Lewis was a top performer in last week’s playoff victory with a 116-yard, 2 TD effort.

Cranbrook comes in to the game with a 9-1 record, with victories over Redford Union, Detroit University Prep, Royal Oak Shrine, Allen Park Cabrini, Riverview Gabriel Richard, Macomb Lutheran North, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, and Madison Heights Lamphere.

Their only loss was to Dearborn Divine Child.

“Our team is playing with good confidence right now. I am pleased with their progress this season,” said D’Angelo.

Cranbrook finished atop the CHSL Intersectional I Division and won their second straight CHSL Championship.

Senior QB Trevor McConnell has thrown for 28 TD’s this year, with Senior RB Aaron Wiggins averaging 11 yards a carry and junior WR Kobi Russell with 7 TD receptions.

Senior DE Chris Smith, Junior DT Danny Files, and sophomore LB Jack Fairman lead a stalwart defense that has pitched 5 shutouts this season.

“Mumford has great big play potential. We look forward to a good game,” said D’Angelo.

The game will be played on Saturday, November 4, 2017. The location is at the Thompson Oval on the Del Walden Field, located on the Cranbrook Campus. The address is 550 Lone Pine Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
