Game Preview- The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes (6-2) (4-1) face the Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Lakers (6-2) (4-1) in the CHSL Prep Bowl; seeks to claim first CD Catholic League Championship.

October 20, 2016

The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes (6-2) (4-1) will take on the Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Lakers (6-2) (4-1) at the annual CHSL Prep Bowl.  This game will serve as the CD Catholic League Championship.

Perennial powerhouse Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (WOLL) has been a 12-time winner of the Prep Bowl.  Stretching back to 1973 and a win over Dearborn St. Alphonsus, the Lakers have made regular appearances in the Prep Bowl.  They have won the CD Championship the last three years.

The Lakers lost a number of seniors off of last year’s team, a team that made it to the MHSAA Division 7 finals.

But the Lakers have not lost their winning ways.  Taking victories in their last 4 games, they have dispatched their opponents in the Intersectional II division.   The Lakers have seemingly found their previous form that allowed them to make it to the state finals last year.

Their only losses were to MI AP ranked Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, and to the Cranes 36-21 in Week 4.

“WOLL is always a well-prepared team that improves week to week.  We don’t take our rematch with them lightly, “said Cranes Head Coach Joe D’Angelo.  “We know they also have experience playing in the big games.”

Cranbrook enters the game having swept the Intersectional I division, a first for the Cranes since joining the CHSL in 2010.

Cranbrook is 6-2 on the season, with their only losses to MI AP ranked opponents Harper Woods Chandler Park and Detroit Loyola.  After a successful 2015 campaign, the Cranes have put together a successful follow up season this year.

“The team is learning to win in tough places, on the road, and against physical opponents” said D’ Angelo.  “They have learned to trust in their preparation and to focus on the opponent for the week.  I am proud of their efforts.”

Due to a rule change in the Catholic League, this was the first opportunity for Cranbrook to participate in the Prep Bowl   The Cranes are proud of this opportunity to showcase their ascendant program.

“I think this will be a great opportunity for the boys to play on a big stage like this.  Earning the right to play in this game goes a long way in building the confidence of our football program.  It adds to the feeling of school pride for all the students,” said D’Angelo.

The Catholic League CD championship game will be played Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.  Kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
