The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes lost a CHSL crossover game to the Division 7 AP ranked Detroit Loyola Bulldogs 30-3 on Saturday. Both teams move on to the Catholic League Prep Bowl next week at Ford Field.
The Cranes opened the scoring on a 41-yard field goal by junior K Pierson Cooke. After a strong defensive effort, the Cranes led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
“We came out with high intensity. We had a good start and played with confidence,” said Cranes Head Coach Joe D’ Angelo.
But the Bulldogs got rolling in the second quarter. Sophomore RB Anthony Robinson bounced off a broken tackle to make a 27-yard score for Loyola. The failed extra point attempt left the score at 6-3.
Late in the second period, Loyola obtained possession on a stalled Cranbrook drive. 3 plays later, senior RB Prince Watkins found a hole and scored on a 36-yard run. Loyola would get the 2-point conversion and go into the half with a 14-3 lead.
In the second half, Loyola would put the game out of reach on a 64-yard run by senior RB Malcolm Mayes in the 3rd period. The Bulldogs would convert the 2-point conversion to make it 22-3.
A late touchdown by sophomore RB Dvaun Bentley would finish the scoring with another 2-point conversion to end the contest at 30-3.
“Loyola is a very disciplined team, with great athletes and great coaching,” said D’Angelo. “They are a class act in the Catholic League.”
Loyola is a member of the AA Division of the Catholic League while the Cranes play in the Intersectional I division. Coach D’Angelo spoke on the significance of playing a team from the more powerful division.
“While it’s tough to play against a more established program, it really helps to measure our growth and effectiveness. Against Loyola, our boys played with heart and earned respect on the field. All in all, our program grew a bit today.”
Both Cranbrook and Loyola now turn their attention to the Catholic Prep Bowl for next week’s games.
The Cranes will face the Waterford Our Lady of Lakes Lakers (WOLL) (6-2) (4-1) for the CD Championship Game. WOLL has won this championship the last three years. Cranbrook defeated Lakes earlier this year 36-21.
Loyola will have a rematch with the Dearborn Divine Child Falcons (6-2)(2-2)for the B Championship Game. Loyola defeated Divine Child 34-24 earlier this season.
Both games will be held at Ford Field on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Loyola vs. Divine Child will play at 1:00 p.m. Cranbrook plays WOLL at 4:00 p.m.
