Cranbrook hangs tough in CHSL crossover game; falls to Divine Child 28-14.

Senior RB Aaron Wiggins goes in for a TD in the Cranes 28-14 loss to Divine Child.

The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes came up short against the Dearborn Divine Child Falcons, taking a 28-14 loss on the road. This loss is Cranbrook first defeat of the season.

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing on a Cranbrook fumble on the second play of the game. The Falcons punched it in on a 15-yard running play to take a 7-0 lead with 9:20 left in the 1st qtr.

After a stalled Cranbrook drive, the Falcons scored again on a 4 yard running play to take a 14-0 lead with: 04 left in the 1st qtr.

The Cranes got rolling in the 2nd quarter behind a 23-yard scamper by senior RB Aaron Wiggins. With 4:13 left in the half, the score stood at 14-7.

But the Falcons took the next possession and made the most of it, culminating on a short pass from senior QB Theo Day to senior WR Quinn Blair. As time ran out on the 2nd quarter, Divine Child led 21-7.

The Cranes got a big defensive stop at the beginning of the 3rd period, forcing a Divine Child punt.

QB Trevor McConnell drove the team down the field, and finished it off with a 7-yard pass to TE Andrew Mertz. A PAT by senior K Pierson Cooke made the score 21-14 with 1:55 left in the 3rd qtr.

After forcing Divine Child to punt again, the Cranes drove deep into Falcon territory. But a fumble on a short pass play gave the ball back to Divine Child at the 13-yard line.

Divine Child would miss a FG attempt, giving the Cranes one last hope. But the drive would stall and give the ball back to Divine Child.

A 16-yard run by senior RB William Duren would seal the deal for the Falcons, bringing the final score to 28-14.

“Our boys did a great job against a talented team, said Cranes Head Coach Joe D’Angelo. “Although we didn’t win the game, it demonstrates to the football community how our program has come.”

McConnell finished the game 11 out of 21 for 103 yards and 1 TD. Wiggins went 11 carries for 85 and 1 TD. WR Kobi Russell had 2 receptions for 64 yards.

Senior DE Chris Smith and sophomore LB Jack Fairman led the team with 11.5 tackles each, while sophomore LB William Kerr added 7.5 tackles.

Senior K/P Pierson Cooke kicked a 56 yard punt and went 2 for 2 on PAT’s.

The Cranes move on to face the Allen Park Cabrini Monarchs at home next week in their CHSL Intersectional I opener.
